1. 补养安神 Formulas that calm Shen with nourishment
1. 天王补心丹 Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan
(from Xiao Zhu Fu Ren liang Fang, means special pill of Heavens emperor to tonify the heart)
Ingredients:
Chief---Sheng Di Huang (radix rehmanniae glutinosae) 120g
Deputy---Xuan Shen (radix scrophulariae ningpoensis) 15g
Deputy---Tian Men Dong (tuber asparagi cochinchinensis) 30g
Deputy---Mai Men Dong (tuber ophiopogonis japonici) 30g
Deputy---Suan Zao Ren (semen zizyphi spinosae) 30g
Deputy---Bai Zi Ren (semen biotae orientalis) 30g
Assistant---Dan Shen (radix salviae miltiorrhizae) 15g
Assistant---Dang Gui (radix angelicae sinensis) 30g
Assistant---Wu Wei Zi (fructus schisandrae chinensis) 30g
Assistant---Yuan Zhi (radix polygalae tenuifoliae) 15g
Assistant---Ren Shen (radix ginseng) 15g
Assistant---Fu Ling (sclerotium poriae cocos) 15g
Envoy---Jie Geng (eadix platycodi grandiflori) 15g
Envoy---Zhu Sha (cinnabaris) 15g (Now it is not used)
Make powder of herbs above to pills, take 9g each time.
Take 3 gram 3 times a day.
Actions: tonify heart, calm Shen, nourish Yin & blood
Indications: Kidney and heart disharmony manifested as irritability, palpitation, anxiety, mentally fatigue, insomnia, inability to concentrate mind, nocturnal emissions, forgetfulness, dry stools, mouth and tongue sores, hotness of palm and sole, red tongue scanty coat, thin rapid pulse.
2. 酸枣仁汤 Suan Zao Ren Tang
(From Jin Gui Yao Lue)
Chief---Suan Zao Ren (semen zizyphi spinosae) 30g
Deputy---Fu Ling (sclerotium poriae cocos) 6g
Deputy---Zhi Mu (radix anemarrhenae asphodeloidis) 9g
Assistant---Chuan Xiong (radix lifustici chuanxiong) 6g
Envoy---Gan Cao (radix glycyrrhizae uralensis) 3g
Actions: nourishes blood and calm Shen, clear heat and relieve irritability
Indications: palpitation, insomnia, irritability and restlessness, dizziness, dry throat and mouth, red tongue, wiry or thin pulse.
3. 甘麦大枣汤Gan Mai Da Zao Tang
From Jin Gui Yao Lue
Ingredients:
Gan Cao (radix glycyrrhizae uralensis)…9g
Xiao Mai (semen tritici aestivi levis)…15g
Da Zao (fructus zizyphi jujubae)…10
Actions: nourish Heart & calm spirit, harmonizes mid Jiao
Indications: disorientation, melancholy and crying, cannot control oneself, restless sleep, may have night sweats, copious yawning, red tongue scanty coat, thin rapid pulse.
2. 重镇安神Formulas that heavily calm Shen
1. 朱砂安神丸Zhu Sha An Shen Wan
Ingredients:
Zhu Sha (cinnabaris)…15g [refine with water]
Huang Lian (rhizoma coptidis)…18g
Dang Gui (radix angelicae sinensis)…7.5g
Sheng Di Huang (radix rehmanniae glutinosae)…7.5g
Zhi Gan Cao (honey fried radix glycyrrhizae uralensis)…16.5g
Actions: Calm Shen, clear heat and tonify Yin
Indications: insomnia, palpitations, irritable, heat in the chest, desire to vomit, dream disturbed sleep, red tongue, thin rapid pulse.
2. 磁朱丸Ci Zhu Wan
Ingredients:
Ci Shi (magnetitum)…60g
Zhu Sha (cinnabaris)…30g
Shen Qu (massa fermentata)…120g
Take 2 gram 3 times a day.
Actions: heavily calms spirit, improves vision & hearing
Indications: palpitations, insomnia, tinnitus, diminished auditory and visual acuity, seizures.
3. 交通心肾 Formulas that harmonize heart and kidney
1. 交泰丸Jiao Tai Wan
Ingredients:
Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, Coptis Rhizome) 18g
Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 3g
Actions: harmonize heart and kidney
Indications: palpitation, insomnia, mouth or tongue sores, thin pulse.
2. 黄连阿胶汤Huang Lian E Jiao Tang
Ingredients:
Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis) 6g --clear heart fire, calms spirit
E Jiao (Gelatinum Corii Asin) 9g --controls heart fire by nourish kidney Yin
Bai Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae) 6g--nourish yin, harmonize heart and kidneys
Ji Zi Huang (Egg Yolk) 2 yolks --drain fire, nourish blood
Actions: nourish Yin and bring fire downwards, eliminate irritability and calm Shen
Indications: irritability, heat sensation in the chest, insomnia, unable to lay down due to irritability, palpitations, anxiety, mouth ulcers. Soreness and weakness of lower back and knee, or nocturnal emission. Red tongue tip, dry yellow coat, thin, rapid pulse.
