1. Formulas that tonify Qi
1. 四君子汤Si Jun Zi Tang

Actions: Tonify Spleen Qi
Indications: Spleen and stomach deficiency manifested as pale face, weak voice, short breath and fatigue, poor appetite and energy, loose stool, pale tongue with white coating, weak pulse.
2. 参苓白术散 Shen Ling Bai Zhu San

Actions: Tonify Qi and Spleen, remove dampness and stop diarrhea
Indications:
1. Diarrhea due to spleen and stomach deficiency manifested as vomiting and diarrhea, poor digestion, chest and abdomen distention, fatigue, lost weight, pale face, pale tongue body with white greasy coating, weak and slow pulse.
2. Coughing due to lung and spleen deficiency, phlegm accumulation manifested as coughing with white phlegm, chest and abdomen distention, pale face, poor appetite, loose stool, pale tongue body with white greasy coating, thin weak and slippery pulse.
3. 玉屏风散 Yu Ping Feng San
(From Yi Fang Lei Ju)
Chief--- Huang Qi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) 30g
Deputy--- Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macroceph) 60g
Assistant--- Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) 60g
Assistant--- Da Zao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) 1 piece
Actions: Tonify Qi, stabilize the exterior, and stop sweating
Indications: Lung/defence(Wei) Qi deficiency manifested as Aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, recurrent colds, shiny and pale face, pale tongue with thin and white coating, weak floating pulse.
Caution: It is not used for night sweating or exterior pathogens are much more than interior deficiency.
4. 补中益气汤Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang
(From Nei Wai Shang Bian Huo Hun, Means tonity the middle and Qi decoction)
Ingredients:
Chief--- Huang Qi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) 18g
Deputy--- Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 6g
Deputy--- Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macroceph) 6g
Deputy, Envoy --- Zhi Gan Cao (Honey fried radix glycyrrhixae uralensis) 9g
Assistant--- Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 6g
Assistant--- Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 6g
Envoy--- Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 6g
Envoy--- Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 6g
Actions: Tonity the middle and Qi, raise the sinking
Indications:
1. Spleen Qi sinking: dizziness and vertigo, blurred vision, tinnitus and loss of hearing, shortness of breath and weak voice, pale face, fatigue, poor appetite, loose stool, pale tongue and weak pulse.
2. Qi deficiency fever: hot body, spontaneous sweating, thirsty but prefer hot drink, shortness of breath and fatigue, pale and puffy tongue, big but weak pulse.
3. The middle Qi sinking syndromes: prolapse of anus and uterus, chronic diarrhea, uterus bleeding, poor appetite, loose stool, pale tongue, and weak and soft pulse.
5. 生脉散Sheng Mai San
Ingredients:
(From Yi Xue Qi Yuan, means pulse regenerating powder)
Chief--- Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 9g
Deputy--- Mai (Men) Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 9g
Assistant--- Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) 6g
Actions: Tonify Qi and nurish Yin, astringene sweat and regenerate pulse
Indications: Qi and Yin both deficiencies manifested as fatigue, shortness of breath and weak voice, profuse spontaneous sweating, or dry cough with limited phlegm, dry mouth, dry and red tongue with thin coating, weak and thin pulse or empty pulse.
6. 人参蛤蚧散 Ren Shen Ge Jie San
(From Bo Ji Fang, means Ginseng and Gecko powder)
Ingredients:
Chief--- Ge Jie (Gecko) 60g
Chief--- Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 60g
Deputy--- Fu Ling (Sclerotium poriae cocos) 60g
Deputy, Envoy --- Zhi Gan Cao (Honey fried radix glycyrrhixae uralensis) 60g
Assistant--- Xing Ren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae) 180g
Assistant--- Sang Bai Pi (Cotex Mori Albae Radicis) 60g
Assistant--- Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) 60g
Assistant--- Bei Mu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) 60g
Take 6-9g each time
Actions: Tonify lung and kidney, stop coughing and wheezing
Indications: lung and kidney deficiency with interior phlegm heat manifested as coughing and wheezing, exhale more than inhale, weak voice, yellow phlegm, or coughing with pus or blood, chest irritably heat, thin body, or whole body edema, floating and weak pulse.
Caution: It should not used for coughing and wheezing due to lung and kidney deficiency with cold. Do not use it for coughing and wheezing with exterior pathogens.
2. 补血 Formulas that tonify blood
1. 四物汤 Si Wu Tang
(From Xian Shou Li Shang Xu Duan Mi Fang, means four ingredient decoction)
Ingredients:
Chief--- Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata)
Deputy--- Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis)
Assistant--- Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba)
Assistant--- Chuan Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong)
Make equal portion of four herbs above. Take 9g each time.
Actions: Tonify blood and regulate blood
Indications: Blood deficiency syndrome manifested as palpitation, insomnia, dizziness and vertigo, pale face, thin body, fatigue, female irregular, scanty and pale menstruation, amenorrhea, abdominal pain around umbilicus mainly, pale tongue, thin and wiry or thin choppy pulse.
Modern applications: menstruation disorders, obstetrics disorders, anemia due to blood deficiency.
Caution: do not use it for dampness in the middle or loose stool. If heavy blood loss, tonify Qi first!
2. 胶艾汤Jiao Ai Tang
Ingredients:
E Jiao (Gelatinum Corii Asini) - 6g. -nourish yin and blood, stop bleeding
Ai Ye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi) - 9g.-warms womb, calms restless fetus, stop bleeding
Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae) - 18g.-nourish yin and blood, regulate menstruation, invigorating blood circulation
Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) - 9g.-nourish yin and blood, regulate menstruation, invigorate blood circulation
Chuan Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong,) - 6g -nourish yin and blood, regulate menstruation, invigorate blood circulation
Bai Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae) - 12g -nourish yin and blood, regulate menstruation, invigorate blood circulation
Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) - 6g. -harmonize all herbal ingredients within formula
Actions: nourish the blood, stop bleeding, regulate menstruation and calm the fetus
Indications: uterine bleeding, excessive menstruation, spotting during menstrual cycle, post partum bleeding, bleeding during pregnancy, abdominal pain, general pale blood, no clots, general weakness and fatigue, soreness of the lower back, dull complexion. Pale, thin white coat tongue. Thin, frail pulse.
3. 当归补血汤 Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang
(From Nei Wai Shang Bian Huo Hun, means Dang Gui Decoction for tonifying blood)
Ingredients:
Chief---Huang Qi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) 30g
Deputy---Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 6g
Actions: tonify blood and regenerate Qi
Indications: fever due to blood deficiency manifested as hot body, red face, thirsty, pale tongue, surging but weak pulse. Also for female menstruation or postpartum fever and headache, or carbuncles which last for long time after opening.
Caution: Do not use it for Yin deficiency fever.
4. 归脾汤Gui Pi Tang
(From Zheng Ti Lei Yao, means restore spleen decoction)
Ingredients:
Chief--- Long Yan Rou (Arillus Longan) 3g
Chief--- Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 3g
Deputy--- Huang Qi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) 3g
Deputy--- Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macroceph) 3g
Deputy--- Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 3g
Assistant---Fu Shen / Fu Ling (Poria) 3g
Assistant--- Yuan Zhi (Radix Polygalae) 3g
Assistant--- Suan Zao Ren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) 3g

Put some Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) when decocting.
Actions: Tonify Qi and blood, benefit spleen and heart
Indications:
1. Both heart and spleen, Qi and blood deficiency manifested as palpitation, forgetfulnesss and insomnia, night sweating and deficient fever, fatigue and poor appetite, pale face and tongue, thin and weak pulse.
2. Bleeding due to spleen not controlling blood manifested as bleeding in stool, subcutaneous purpura, uterine bleeding, early or prolonged menstruation, heavy bleeding during menstruation with pale color, pale face and tongue, thin and weak pulse.
Caution: Do not used for bleeding due to blood heat or Yi deficiency.
3. Formulas that tonify both Qi and blood
1. 八珍汤 Ba Zhen Tang
Ingredients:
Chief--- Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 30g
Chief--- Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata) 30g
Deputy--- Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macroceph) 30g
Deputy--- Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 30g
Assistant--- Fu Ling (Sclerotium poriae cocos) 30g
Assistant--- Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 30g
Assistant--- Chuan Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong) 30g
Assistant, Envoy --- Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 30g
Decocte them with 5 slices of Sheng Jiang and 1 piece of Da Zao. Take 9g each time, 2-3 times a day.
Actions: Tonify Qi and blood
Indications: Both Qi and blood deficiency manifested as pale or withered yellow face, dizziness and vertigo, fatigue, shortness of breath and tired to talk, palpitation, insomnia, poor appetite, pale tongue with thin and white coating, thin and weak pulse.
2. 十全大补汤 Shi Quan Da Bu Tang
Ingredients:
Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) 61 mg
Shu Di (cooked Radix Rehmanniae) 61 mg
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 45 mg
Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 45 mg
Fu Ling (Poria) 45 mg
Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 45 mg
Bai Shao (Radix Alba Paeoniae) 45 mg
Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae) 45 mg
Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) 31 mg
mixfried Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 31 mg
Sheng Jiang (uncooked Rhizoma Zingiberis) 31 mg
Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 15 mg
Take 9g each time, 2-3 times a day.
Actions: warmly Tonifies Qi and nourishing blood
Indications: deficiency of both Qi and blood, pale complexion, shortness of breath and palpitation, dizziness and spontaneous perspiration, tiredness and lack of strength, limbs not warm, menorrhagia, men or women deficiency of primordial qi, yin deficiency and cough due to the functional imbalance of five viscera, hectic fever in the afternoon, thirst and fidgetiness
This formula is derived from Ba Zhen Tang with added Ru Gui and Huang Qi.
3. 炙甘草汤Zhi Gan Cao Tang
From Shang Han Lun, means Propared Zhi Gan Cao decoction

Indications:
1. Irregular pulse with palpitation, fatigue, shortness of breath, red tongue with thin coating, or dry and thin tongue body.
2. Lung atrophy syndromes manifested as coughing with thin phlegm, thin body, shortness of breath, insomnia, spontaneous and night sweating, dry mouth and throat, constipation, rapid and weak pulse.
3. 泰山磐石散Tai Shan Pan Shi San
(From Gu Jin Yi Tong Da Quan, Means Stability Powder likes Mount Tai)

Actions: Tonify Qi and spleen, nourish blood and clam fetus
Indications: Threatened miscarriage due to Qi and blood deficiency manifested as restless fetus or having history of abortion and miscarriage with pale face, fatigue, lower back pain, poor appetite, pale tongue with thin white coating, slippery and weak pulse.
Caution: control sex and anger; do not take wine and vinegar.

1. 六味地黄丸Liu Wei Di Huang Wan
(From Xiao Er Yao Zhen Zhi Jue, means Six ingredients with Di Huang)

Actions: nourish kidney Yin
Indications: kidney Yin deficiency syndrome manifested as soreness and weakness of lower back and knee, vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, night sweating, spontaneous and nocturnal emission, diabetes, steaming bone syndrome, hot palm and sole, dry tongue and sore throat, unstable teeth, heel pain, prolonged closing of fontanel of infant, red tongue with thin coating or without coating, deep, thin and rapid pulse.
Caution: contraindicated with loose stool and poor appetite due to spleen deficiency.
2. Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan:
Liu Wei Di Huang Wan plus Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) and Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri). Nourish Yin and clear deficiency heat. For deficiency heat.
3. Qi Ju Di Huang Wan:
Liu Wei Di Huang Wan plus Gou Qi Zi (Fructus Lycii) and Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos). Nourish kidney and liver, brighten eyes. For blurred vision, dry eyes due to kidney and liver Yin deficiency.
4. 都气丸Du Qi Wan
Ingredients:
Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata) 24g
San Zhu Yu (Fructus Corni) 12g
Shan Yao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) 12g
Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis) 9g
Fu Ling (Poria) 9g
Mu Dan Pi (Cortex Moutan Radicis) 9g
Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) 6g
Actions: nourich kidney Yin and grasp kidney Qi
Indications: Wheezing or hiccup with kidney Yin deficiency
5. 左归丸Zuo Gui Wan
(From Jing Yue Quan Shu, means restoring the left pill)

Deputy--- Gui Ban (Plasttrum Testudinis) 120g
Deputy--- Lu Jiao Jiao (Cervi Cornus Colla) (Deer antler glue) 120g

Assistant--- Gou Qi Zi (Fructus Lycii)
Assistant--- Tu Si Zi (Semen Cuscutae) 120g
Assistant--- Chuan Niu Xi (eadix cyathulae officinalis) 120g
Decocted and then put honey in decoction to make pills. Take 9g pills each time, 2-3 times a day.
Actions: nourish kidney Yin, enrich essence and marrow
Indications: kidney essence deficiency syndrome manifested as soreness and weakness of lower back and knee, vertigo, thin and skinny body shape, tinnitus, hearing loss, insomnia, night sweating, dry tongue and sore throat, red tongue with thin coating or without coating, deep, thin and rapid pulse.
Caution: contraindicated with loose stool due to spleen deficiency.
6. 左归饮 Zuo Gui Yin
Restore the Left Kidney Decoction
Ingredients:
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Glutinosae Conquitae) 60g. -nourish kidney yin
ShanYao (Radix Dioscoreae Oppositae) 6g. -nourish yin, tonify spleen
Gou Qi Zi (Fructus Lycii) 6g. -nourish liver blood
Fu Ling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos) 6g. -tonify spleen Qi
Shan Zhu Yu (Fructus Corni Officinalis) 6g. -nourish liver blood
Zhi Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) 3g. -tonify spleen Qi
Actions: nourish the kidney Yin.
Indications: lower back soreness, spontaneous emission (seminal emission), night sweat, dry mouth, dry throat, thirst with desire to drink Tongue - shiny, peeled Pulse - thin, rapid
7. 大补阴丸Da Bu Yi Wan
(From Dan Xi Xi Fa, means the pill for greatly tonifying Yin)
Chief--- Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata) 180g
Chief--- Gui Ban (Plasttrum Testudinis) 180g
Deputy--- Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri) 120g
Deputy--- Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) 120g
Grind the ingredients above into powder, decocted with Zhu Ji Shui (pigs’ vertebrae marrow) and Feng Mi (Honey) and form them into pills. Take 6-9g pills with salt water each time and tow times a day.
Actions: nourish Yin and reduce deficiency fire
Indications: Yin deficiency with deficiency fire manifested as steaming bone disorder with tidal afternoon fever, night sweating, spontaneous emission, coughing with blood, irritability, easily angry, heat and pain feeling of knee and leg, or thirst and hungry easily, red tongue with thin coating, Chi pulse is rapid and strong.
8. 一贯煎Yi Guan Jian
(From Xu Ming Yi Lei An, means Linking Decoction)

Actions: Nourish Yin and soothe liver Qi
Indications: Yin deficiency with liver Qi stagnation manifested as chest and hypochondriac pain, acid regurgitation, bitter mouth, dry mouth and throat, red and dry tongue, thin weak or wiry weak pulse. It is also used for hernia and mass.
9. 百合固金汤Bai He Gu Jin Tang

Bai He (bulbus lilii) 3g
Mai Men Dong (tuber ophiopogonis japonici) 4.5g
Sheng Di Huang (radix rehmanniae glutinosae) 6g
Shu Di Huang (radix rehmanniae glutinosae conquitae) 9g
Xuan Shen (radix scrophulariae ningpoensis) 2.4g
Dang Gui (radix angelicae sinensis) 3g
Bai Shao (radix paeoniae lactiflorae) 3g
Bei Mu (bulbus fritillariae) 3g
Jie Geng (radix platycodi grandiflori) 2.4g
Gan Cao (radix glycyrrhizae uralensis) 3g
Actions: Nourishes Yin, transforms phlegm, stops coughing
Indications: Hemoptysis due to lung and kidney Yin deficiency, deficienct fire flare up manifested as dry and sore throat, cough with blood, 5 center heat, night sweats, red tongue with scanty coat, rapid thin pulse.
10. 二至丸Er Zhi Wan
(From Fu Shou Jing Fang, means Two Ultimate Pill)
Chief--- Nu Zhen Zi (Fructus Ligustri Lucidi)
Chief--- Han Lian Cao (Herba Ecliptae Prostratae)
Grind Nu Zhen Zi (Fructus Ligustri Lucidi) into powder; decoct Han Lian Cao (Herba Ecliptae Prostratae) into dense decoction. Put honey and water with them to make pills. Take 9g each time, 2 times a day.
Actions: nourish liver and kidney Yin, stop bleeding
Indications: liver and kidney Yin deficiency manifested as dizziness and tinnitus, insomnia, weak knee and low back, gray hair, excess bleeding during menses, red tongue with thin coating, thin or thin rapid pulse.
5. Formulas that nourish Yang
1. 金匱肾气丸Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan
(From Jin Gui Yao Lue, means Kidney-Qi Bolus from Jin Gui Yao Lue)
Chief--- Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Praeparata) 30g
Chief--- Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 30g
Deputy--- Sheng Di Huang (radix rehmanniae) 240g
Deputy--- San Zhu Yu (Fructus Corni) 120g
Deputy--- Shan Yao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) 120g
Assistant--- Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis) 90g
Assistant--- Fu Ling (Poria) 90g
Assistant--- Mu Dan Pi (Cortex Moutan Radicis) 90g
Grind them into powder and form to small pill with honey. Take 6-10g each time two times a day.
Actions: tonify kidney Yang.
Indications: kidney Yang deficiency manifested as lower back pain, weakness of lower extremities, cold sensation in the lower body, tenseness in the lower abdomen, oliguria or polyuria especially at night, impotence and premature ejaculation, pale and swollen tongue, white tongue coating, deep weak pulse.

Grind the ingredients above into powder, decocted with Zhu Ji Shui (pigs’ vertebrae marrow) and Feng Mi (Honey) and form them into pills. Take 6-9g pills with salt water each time and tow times a day.
